This article refers to the Top 10 Greatest Business Disasters. Surprisingly, my first business wasn’t listed – te- he! If you take a peek at the article, many of these disasters are attributed to specific actions taken. So, it makes how many disasters we can avoid. Specifically, can stopping specific behaviours improve leadership skills?
Businesses have a tendency to reward people on doing rather than “not doing” things. So what happens, if we look at it the other way around?
Miracles Can Happen
Who can forget the clever pilot who landed an aeroplane in the Hudson River in New York after it experienced engine failure just minutes after takeoff in 2009? And yet, I wonder how many pilots had avoided crashing planes by stopping some behaviour. Have we rewarded them with high profile global praise? There must be a few and here’s one of them: http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/150352#.T3Nk_4781YQ
A Cumulative Effect
Almost every business disaster is the result of a succession of mistakes, rather than one single event. There is no fault in making mistakes, in fact, the quicker you make them the faster you can succeed. Repeating the same mistake is where the problems start to arise.
Learning To Identify And Change Our Behaviours
We can all benefit from learning how to identify the patterns of mistakes that precede most business disasters. So the question is this – is it time to start writing “To Stop Lists” rather than “To-Do Lists”?
And remember, this isn’t just about business. This idea of stopping detrimental behaviour spans our entire lives, doesn’t it?
