Supervision in the coaching arena is yet to be a best practice requirement, as it is in the early careers of professional counsellors, clinical hypnotherapists, or psychologists. Personally, I believe the benefits of supervision in NLP coaching are numerous.
What Is Supervision?
Working under supervision means that a coach uses the services of another more experienced and qualified NLP coach to review their NLP coaching practice with clients.
Supervision focuses on the interactions between the supervisor, supervisee, client, and the context or framework of the client’s situation, with the aim of promoting effective practice.
Supervision aims to build on the strengths and successful outcomes of the NLP Coach and address any areas for development. Supervision supports an individual’s organisational, professional and personal objectives including focusing on competency, emotionally-unattached facilitation, accountable practice, continuing professional development, personal and emotional support, confidentiality, and highly ethical practice.
It is a valuable way of getting guidance and support from a more experienced practitioner. It can facilitate are more grounded coaching approach, maintain professional and ethical boundaries, and develop the supervisee’s knowledge, whilst taking steps to minimise “burnout”.
Supervision offers a strong foundation for the provision of safe, ethical and, competent NLP coaching for clients.

Benefits Of Supervision For You As A Coach?
- Deliver better outcomes through exploring and discussing new ideas.
- Reflect on practices.
- Enhance problem-solving skills.
- Improve clarity and objectivity in decision-making.
- Empower, motivate, and increase work satisfaction.
- Deletes the ‘failure’ perspective and replaces it with an ‘all feedback is good’ mindset.

Benefits of Supervision For Your Clients?
- Supervision protects clients by involving an impartial third party in the working relationship of a coach and client.
- This helps reduce the risk of serious oversight and helps the coach to reflect on their own feelings.
- Clients benefit from two minds supporting them in achieving their goals.
How Much Supervision And How Often?
Just as a leader benefits from coaching, the supervision environment offers a safe and judgement-free place for new and seasoned coaches to share their successes and failures and find their personal style of mastery in the way they work with their clients.
I offer 3 hours of coaching supervision with my NLP Practitioner training and 6 hours of coaching supervision with my NLP Master Practitioner training. All supervision is carried out online.
Often coaches working in full-time practice choose to continue with 60 or 90 minutes of supervision every month to support them in elevating their perspective and confidence. What’s more, anyone who dedicates their working life to facilitating growth and achievement in others often benefits from allowing themselves to the client. The benefits of supervision In NLP Coaching is found in the perspective shift and the support.
It’s always useful to work with a Supervisor operating in a similar field to you, or one with a general practice. Whoever you choose to work with, give yourself permission to see it as a powerful self-investment that pays back in your performance. Two heads are always better than one!
