I believe delegates get more from their training experience when they train away from home. Whether they’re attending a Farcical Life Retreat or one of my Certified NLP Trainings I know that delegates can integrate their learning more effectively if they aren’t heading home to their usual lives every evening after class. Quite simply, destination training gets better results.
The Additional Cost Pays Back
I appreciate there are additional costs involved when you take the decision to travel and stay in a hotel. And yet, from my perspective, if you or your company takes the decision to invest in your career or personal development, I’m sure you want to maximise on that investment.
Here are 6 reasons why I believe that training away from home is more effective for delegates.
1. No distractions.
As much as we believe that we can focus on ourselves or on learning something new, if we go home to children, work emails, and other personal responsibilities at the end of each training day, we are distracted.
If you attend a residential training, it’s so much easier to focus on the task at hand and find a deeper level of understanding. Why? Because if you normally operate at 100 miles an hour, you may actually give yourself time to step back and think. Worth consideration we think!
2. Destination training get better results and provides the opportunity to travel.
If you choose to study in one of my locations abroad it may even land you on a completely different continent to where you live now. This gives you the benefit of extending your stay and fully exploring new areas or experiencing some diving or other recreational activities that you wouldn’t normally have access to in your daily life, such as diving or water sports.
What’s more, the spas in our training locations are second to none and very reasonably priced. Relaxation = greater ability to learn. And if you’re a single traveller, looking for more than just a book and beach for your holiday, destination training offers you company. That is to say, you get the opportunity to mix group activities in a safe environment and time alone if you want it.
3. Destination training allows you gain insight into another culture first-hand.
Cultural differences are more than just differences in language, food, appearances, and personal habits. A person’s culture reflects very deep perceptions, beliefs, and values that influence his or her way of life and the way that s/he views the world. Travellers who experience cultural differences personally can come to truly understand where other cultures are coming from.
When you take a course overseas you have the opportunity to meet with fellow students from all over the world. Just imagine the opportunity for sharing ideas and changing perspectives. If you really want to dive in you may find it interesting to spend time speaking with hotel staff and locals. Expanding your thought bubble is always an enjoyable experience! You’ll make new friends, in new places, and open up lots of new opportunities.
4. Destination training will help you develop skills and give you experiences a classroom setting will never provide.
If you compare a training run in a classroom environment or a hotel conference room with the experience of a destination training, it’s a matter of chalk and cheese.
Attending training at one of our retreat destinations allows you to wake up to the sound of the sea, and then enjoy a leisurely breakfast, some diving, a relaxing spa experience and then learn in a low-key relaxed environment. You’ll get a chance for self-reflection and to activate parts of your deep unconscious to bring you new ideas and creative thoughts. What’s more, when you combine activities involving your mind and body you leave with a sense of wellness that you may not have had for many years.
5. Destination training helps you to learn about yourself.
Delegates who study abroad return home with new ideas and perspectives about themselves and their own culture.
The experience abroad often challenges them to reconsider their own beliefs and values. The experience may perhaps strengthen those values or it may cause delegates to alter or abandon them and embrace new concepts and perceptions.
The social interaction with people you wouldn’t normally meet in your day-to-day helps you expand your mind and increase your creativity. You’ll learn about new ideas you haven’t even signed up for!
6. Destination training reduces judgement.
Immersing yourself in a new culture teaches you about the subjectivity of the media and the world beyond your current thought boundaries and perspective.
Actually, delegates who study abroad return home with an informed and much less biased perspective toward other cultures and peoples. Sometimes, we come face to face with the assumptions that other people make about people from our own country, giving us the opportunity to look within and ask questions.
Moreover, the experience leads us to a place where we’re less inclined to judge quickly and more inclined to ask questions first.
